The Helen Chronicles When Your Mother Falls Apart eBook John Hamilton Farr

The HELEN CHRONICLES is an annotated, chronological collection of blog posts that tell the story of a mother’s chaotic last few years under the influence of dementia, Alzheimer’s, paranoia, schizophrenia, delusions, and hallucinations. (If that says “family” to you, you’re in the right place.) The clang and shudder of the final rolling train wreck, presented in real-time dispatches through the eyes of an oldest son who tried to do the right thing out of love and duty at great risk to himself. One way or the other, Helen made it impossible for us to help her, as if she’d really moved on years ago and left us with her shadow. We all did the best we could, and this is how it happened.
Includes special epilogue, "The Untold Story of Helen's Capture," plus bonus essay, "Juan del Llano and the End of Nearly Everything." Approximately 33,000 words, 20 photographs.

The Helen Chronicles When Your Mother Falls Apart eBook John Hamilton Farr
This sounds something like my mother's story because it is.Helen loved cultivating pointless drama even as she went downhill. I'm so grateful that John, Bill and Mary dealt with Helen's difficult exit.
I would have liked to have seen more background into the folks' formative years in the Great Depression and their glory years during and after WWII. The treatment of Mother in this crisp narrative adventure doesn't seem even remotely sympathetic, but maybe that's because I had it easier than my older siblings. Low expectations for me didn't turn out to be all about neglect; sometimes it felt like freedom. So glad I wasn't the first born child.

The Helen Chronicles When Your Mother Falls Apart eBook John Hamilton Farr Reviews
The author is amazingly loving towards a mother who has not encouraged or supported him during his childhood. It would be easy to walk away from her when she needed help, but refused it because of her mental state, or drop out as his brother did. He has the burden of being the oldest child and having to keep it all together as the trustee. I find it incredible that he has succeeded in spite of the subtle and not so subtle discouragement in his youth.
So sad is my reaction after reading this. The struggle for the basic need of knowing you are loved unconditionally by your parents-especially your mother-was so foreign to me. Never once in my life have I had to even consider such a thought and Helen and my mother were sisters! The book was so compelling to me, I couldn't stop until I read it through this evening. So well written...it held my interest every minute. Thank you for giving me this inner view of the cousins and your parents whom we always wanted to know better.... I was always intrigued by my "military traveling cousins!" Good or bad, we are still family and I do have some good memories of times we were all together! Loved your book!
